Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Jordan Henderson on a free transfer from Brentford.

The 36-year-old England midfielder has put pen to paper on a two-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until June 2028.

• Transfer fee: Free (Henderson became a free agent after mutually terminating the final year of his Brentford deal)
• Role: Central/defensive midfielder, with a strong emphasis on leadership and experience in the dressing room

Henderson left Brentford by mutual consent last week. He had signed a two-year deal with the Bees in the summer of 2025 after returning from Ajax, and made 32 Premier League appearances last season.

Henderson’s Reaction

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, Henderson said:

“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.

For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

Why Chelsea Signed Him

Under new head coach Xabi Alonso, Chelsea have prioritised adding experienced heads to a young squad. Henderson follows Danny Welbeck as another veteran arrival this summer. The club sees him as a leader who can mentor younger players while still contributing on the pitch.

Henderson is a former Liverpool captain who made 492 appearances for the Reds, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup. He also played for Sunderland, Al-Ettifaq (Saudi Arabia) and Ajax before his season at Brentford.

He is expected to link up with the squad once he completes his post-World Cup break with England.

Chelsea have now completed several signings this window, including Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Morgan Rogers and Danny Welbeck, as Alonso reshapes the squad.
