Manchester United one step away from ending Frank Ilet’s ‘no haircut challenge’

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United visit West Ham with the ‘Red Devils’ poised to to achieve their fifth consecutive victory. Should United run out winners in East London on Tuesday night, it would bring an end to one of the longest-running viral challenges in English football.

Frank Ilett, a Man United supporter, hasn’t cut his hair since October 5, 2024, accumulating 493 days of growth as a protest against the team’s inconsistency. Carrick admitted to being aware of the situation: “My children have let me know, it makes me smile, but it won’t have any impact on team talk.”

From Ten Hag and Amorim to the stability of Carrick

The “United Strand” social media challenge has survived three different managerial regimes, reflecting the club’s institutional crisis. Ilett began his reign under Erik ten Hag and retained his barnet during Rúben Amorim’s 14 months, a period in which the team slipped to 15th place. Under Carrick’s interim management in 2026, United have regained consistency, remaining the only unbeaten team of the calendar year and climbing to fourth in the Premier League with 44 points.

What began as a personal challenge transformed into a social media phenomenon with two million followers, even attracting sponsorships from hair care brands.

However, fame also brought hostility; on September 20, 2025, Ilett was physically assaulted at Old Trafford by a fan who questioned his loyalty. In response to the criticism, Frank linked his challenge to charity: once he achieves his fifth victory, he will donate his hair to the Little Princess Trust to make wigs for children with cancer.

The final countdown

Tuesday’s match against Nuno Espírito Santo and Paco Jémez’s West Ham represents a “doomsday” for Ilett’s hair. The Hammers arrive in the midst of a crisis, sitting in 18th place with a defense that has conceded 48 goals this season. If United live up to expectations, Ilett plans to hold the hair-cutting ceremony publicly at Old Trafford, symbolically closing the book on more than 16 months of inconsistent performances.
